Arrival in Paro Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, your local guide will accompany you on a 1.5-hour journey to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan.

 Explore Simtokha Dzong, Also referred to as Sangak Zabdhon Phodrang, translating to “Palace of the Profound Meaning of Secret Mantras” in the Bhutanese language, this compact dzong stands as a testament to Bhutan’s rich history. Constructed in 1628 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the unifier of Bhutan, it holds the distinction of being the inaugural dzong of its kind in the country. Originally a significant Buddhist monastery, this edifice has evolved into a pivotal site for Dzongkha language education, hosting one of the leading institutes dedicated to the language. Recently, it underwent a thorough renovation, preserving its historical significance while adapting to contemporary needs.

Dechen Phodrang, meaning “Palace of Great Bliss,” stands as a Buddhist monastery nestled in Thimphu, Bhutan, situated to the north of the city.

Established as a monastic school, known as a lobdra, in 1971, Dechen Phodrang currently accommodates 450 student monks enrolled in comprehensive eight-year courses, overseen by a dedicated staff of 15. This monastery holds a significant collection of historical Bhutanese artifacts, including 12th-century paintings meticulously preserved under UNESCO’s watchful eye. Noteworthy among its treasures is a prominent statue of Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal located on the upper floor. In the downstairs chapel, a central Sakyamuni Buddha takes a revered place, adding to the spiritual ambiance of this sacred site.

Paro Taktsang, also referred to as the Taktsang Palphug Monastery or the Tiger’s Nest, is a revered Vajrayana Himalayan Buddhist site perched on the cliffsides of the upper Paro valley in Bhutan. This sacred location holds historical significance, as it is one of thirteen Tiger’s Nest caves across historical Tibet where Padmasambhava engaged in the practice and teachings of Vajrayana Buddhism.

Drakarpo, also recognized as the miniature-Taktsang, is among the sacred sites situated on a cliffside in southern Paro, elevated at approximately 2,650 meters and blessed by Guru Rinpoche. The name Drakarpo translates to “the splitting of rock.” According to legend, Guru Rinpoche meditated at this site and, through his spiritual prowess, fractured a rock, unveiling a concealed evil spirit. The ritual of circumambulating the Drakarpo monastery 108 times is believed to purify one of their sins. Beyond its religious significance, a trek to the monastery offers a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding valleys.
