Traditional Sports in Bhutan

Archery, the beloved national sport of Bhutan, has evolved from its historical use as a defensive weapon in ancient wars to a recreational activity during festivals and special occasions. Played with traditional bamboo bows, archers aim to hit the target while the opposing team engages in singing and dancing. Women contribute by singing bawdy songs to distract the opponents.

Khuru, a dart-throwing game, is popular among men during New Year celebrations. While the men participate in archery, the women take on the traditional roles of food preparation and brewing alcohol.
As Bhutan undergoes development, there is a growing interest in modern sports like football, basketball, and golf among the youth. While traditional games are more prevalent in rural communities, efforts are being made to revive them and preserve the nation’s rich cultural heritage.

Specific traditional sports in Bhutan include:

  1. Archery: Two teams shoot at a target 145 meters away, celebrating hits with dancing and singing. Archers often claim that consuming alcohol enhances their aim.
  2. Khuru: Teams of 8 to 12 players throw large darts at a target 20 meters away, accompanied by singing, dancing, and revelry.
  3. Sok Som: Similar to javelin, players aim to hit a target at the end of the range, historically popular among cow herders.
  4. Degor: Two teams of six players take turns throwing flat stones at a wooden target in the ground, scoring points based on proximity or hits.
  5. Pungdo: Bhutanese shot-put involves players throwing flat stones from shoulder level.
  6. Jigdum: Players throw a 1-foot-long sharp-ended wood at the target, using both single and two-pronged wood variations.
  7. Keshey: The Bhutanese version of wrestling involves opponents holding each other from the waist and attempting to toss their opponent onto the ground.
  8. Sheray Paray: Two individuals take turns holding each other’s wrist, with one trying to break free from the other.
  9. Langthab: Translating to bullfight, this sport requires strong heads as players attempt to head-butt each other into submission
