Discovering the Land of the Thunder Dragon - 5-Day Journey

Experience the essence of Bhutan as you traverse the country, delving into its unique way of life and culture. Your expedition begins in the west, meandering through central and eastern regions, unveiling breathtaking landscapes and revealing the traditional arts, crafts, and textiles that make Bhutan truly extraordinary.

Your journey commences as you arrive in Paro, Bhutan’s gateway. From there, you’ll embark on a scenic drive to Thimphu, the capital city. After reaching Thimphu, you’ll check into your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at your leisure. Stroll through the picturesque valley in the evening, and spend the night in Thimphu.

Your day kicks off with sightseeing in Thimphu. Begin at the BBS Tower, offering panoramic views of Thimphu Valley. Visit the Motithang mini zoo to see the Takin, Bhutan’s national animal, and explore the Anim Dratshang (Nunnery). The National Library and Paper Factory will further enrich your cultural experience. In the afternoon, visit the Memorial Chorten, a monument honoring King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, Bhutan’s third king. Explore the School of Art and Craft, Zangthopelri Lhakang, and the Handicrafts Emporium. Later in the day, embark on a scenic drive to Punakha, a valley surrounded by majestic snow-capped peaks and Bhutan’s former capital until 1955. Upon arrival in Punakha, you’ll check into your hotel and relax for the evening.

The morning is dedicated to exploring Punakha Dzong, an architectural marvel built by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel in the 17th century at the confluence of the Po and Mo Chu rivers. The Dzong holds religious relics and the embalmed body of Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. Afterward, journey to Paro, the most scenic valley in Bhutan, historically significant as the crossroads for major trade routes to Tibet. Your overnight stay will be in Paro.

This morning, embark on a sightseeing tour in Paro. Begin at the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, an ancient fortress that once guarded the Paro valley against Tibetan invasions. Then, hike to Taktsang Monastery, famously known as the ‘Tiger’s Nest,’ perched 3,000 feet above the valley floor. In the afternoon, visit Paro Dzong and the National Museum, housed in a historic watchtower boasting an exceptional collection of Thangka Paintings.
